- My cw mentor/Elmer was KQ5I, now AA4GZ. In 1981 we only lived three or four
- miles from one another but 80 cw always saw "KA5MWD DE KQ5I" and response.
- Then KA5MWD (me) would send, "PSE QRS QRS." And he would until and he'd
- slowly creep up speed and make me sweat again. This went on at least until
- I upgraded to Advanced in 1983. But in those QSOs not only did my speed go
- up but so did my use of condensed text. I was an air traffic controller at
- the time and that helped immensly. For the sake of expediency everything

- This sounds like the old system when people had to drive hours to get
- to one of the few times a year the FCC offices were willing to give a
- test.
-
- There is no need to be so statist. Sure, giving the people the power

-
- <snip>
-
- In fact, before the "digital era", it was impossible to design such a
- transmitter. The only reason that modern gear does not transmit "out
- of band" is that the computer controlling the transmitter is programmed
- to prevent the transmitter from keying when the frequency is not within
- the desired band. The classic Swans, Hallicrafters, etc. did not have
- this feature and the amateur would have to engage brain and remember
- where the band edges were, the width of his transmitted signal, and
- when he last calibrated the analog dial. Frequency counters were few
- and far between in those days!
-
- Some amateurs feel restricted by the band restrictions on modern,
- digitally controlled gear. My father has modified his IC751A for
- continuous coverage as it makes tuning up and down the bands much
- easier. He has no desire to operate out of band, and I think that
- after 30+ years of operation, he probably remembers where the edges
- are.
-
- I have opened up the receive restriction on my IC W2A, but have left
- the transmit limits unmodified. My reasoning is that in the event of
- theft, I would not want the radio to be capable of mischief in the
- VHF public service allocations. It's all the hams need to have some
- idiot harassing the police misidentified as an amateur when he is
- caught. Unlike my father's situation, the tuning effort required
- to program the W2A does not change with the modification.

- Hi people, this might sound like a silly request, but a little while ago I bought the
- International Callbook, in order to be able to send QSL cards direct. When I got it I
- realised that my idea of international (all nations) was not the same as their definition
- (all nations except North America - PLEASE NOTE that that is not just all nations except

-
- I can look up U.S. (and Canadian, for some reason) callsigns using the callsign server
- at buffalo.edu (or something like that), and I can look up European, Asian, South
- American, African and Oceanian callsigns in the International Callbook.
-
- This is very useful, and so far has served about 99% of my needs.
-
- Could anyone tell me the addresses for the following stations?
-
- 6Y5GR
- FM5GN
- FG5BG
- HT1T
- and CO1RG

- Thank you very much for any help,

-
- Good point - the shohizei or "consumption" (sales) tax is 3%. However,
- if you bitch and moan enough, many shops won't bother hassling with you
- about it.
-
- In Akihabara (Tokyo) - I suggest the following stores:
- T-Zone (they do carry some "export" models)
- Ham Geppan
- Rocket
-
- Also - be forewarned that Akihabara is famous for being a "Mecca" of sorts
- for people seeking virtually any kind of electronic goodies. It is NOT
- known as being the place to go for the best prices. There are other
- places to go outside of Tokyo proper (if you have the time) where prices
- are a bit lower. Some of the larger shops in Akihabara that sell
- ham gear also have stores in other parts of the country and in the
- the suburbs of metropolitan Tokyo.
-
- Be aware that it is now extremely difficult to buy an "export" model
- of VHF gear. The JAs are limited to 144-146MHz on 2M; a few years ago
- a "J" mark was added to most HTs to indicate that they could NOT be
- reprogrammed for 144-148MHz.
-
- A few other comments about buying Ham gear in Japan:
-
- 1) HF rigs come in several power "flavors" to match license classes in Japan.
- If you buy an HF rig there, make sure you get the power rating you want
- (10, 25, 50, 100 watts, etc.).
- Make sure that the HF rig has the ability to transmit on all bands
- available in your home country (e.g. JAs get only 7000-7100 KHz).
-
- 2) No 220MHz rigs in Japan (those freqs are used for broadcast television).
-
- 3) 70cm "domestic" rigs operate only 430-440MHz (not 440-450 like in USA).
- ALL 70 cm repeaters in Japan are "required" to use the mandatory
- 88Hz sub-audible access tone.
-
- 4) As mentioned above, 2M JA equipment is good only for 144-146MHz.
- Since there are no repeaters authorized on 2M in Japan, be careful
- that any rig you buy is useable in your home country.
